Why Survey Control Still Matters with SLAM Scanners

Overview

There’s no doubt that modern SLAM scanners are transforming the way we capture data. Tools like the CHCNav RS10 make collecting detailed point clouds faster and more accessible than ever. But ease of use shouldn’t replace core surveying principles. Accuracy still depends on solid groundwork, and that means tying scans into survey control.

CHCNAV RS10 DEMO

Recently, one of our surveyors carried out a scan using the RS10. The key detail? It was tied into established survey control installed by a qualified surveyor. That’s what separates a quick scan from reliable geospatial data you can stand behind.

Unlike many SLAM units on the market, the CHC RS10 lets you capture control points as you scan, whether that’s a survey nail or a retro target. Using CHCNAV’s CoPre software, those control points can be cross-checked and adjusted using real control values (in ASCII format). The process highlights any inconsistencies, lets you choose whether to adjust the data, and outputs a clear, auditable CSV report with delta values for full traceability.

That control gave us confidence in the data and ensured the results were more than just visually impressive: they were reliable, measurable, and fit for use.

RS10, Why IT Matters

At Tri-Site, we’ve seen firsthand how overlooked control can lead to costly rework, misalignment across disciplines or issues later in the construction phase. That’s why we always advocate for control, with whatever equipment you use. Control gives your data context, reliability, and most importantly, integrity.

This is why we recommend the RS10. It isn’t just another SLAM tool. It’s a professional-grade device built for surveyors. With integrated GNSS support (NTRIP/PPK) and survey control alignment baked in, it delivers the accuracy and confidence you need on real-world projects.
